service design the movie

a quick guide to the characteristics of service design

As part of Engine's work with UCE (University of Central England), we were asked to write and produce a film to explain service design - its characteristics, the way it works and the key benefits that help it stand out against other disciplines.

This was a great opportunity to also edit a generic version which could be put up on the Engine website, following the site and studio's ethos of sharing knowledge freely to help develop the market and its understanding of Engine's offering, and also to stimulate debate and inform those studying design with an interest or intention of becoming a service designer.

The film was split into four key characteristics which were then explained through a few case studies, taking into account large budget private sector projects and also smaller budget public sector work to show where the consistencies and differences lie.

From planning to scripting, then filming and editing, the whole film was turned around in less than two weeks to provide our client with one of the first films made specifically about service design, and the general public the opportunity to find out more about it through the generic cut.
