RGB-365 sundial

a spatial interventon combiging micro- and macro-time

Usage patterns of a neglected space in Goldsmiths University grounds were studied and combined with the character of the location to develop a graphic solution to a spatial problem.

I selected a neglected courtyard used only by smokers and the occasional member of staff who knew it was there as a convenient shortcut. I wanted to cater for these rhythmic, repetitive visits to the space by installing something that would develop and shift over time.

The movement of the sun through the courtyard was measured and harnessed to create an intervention that connects the central social focus of the space with nature and a sense of time passing on a daily and seasonal scale.

The three lenses, mounted on the wall, focus the sun (thanks to a lot of trigonometry) into a perfect white circle on the ground for just one moment. The rest of the year, the three coulours disperse before converging and overlapping again. It is a subtle year-long sundial that connects people working on micro-scales of time to remember the bigger picture when they take a break and to stand back from their day.
